If you grew up in the early 2000s you would have memorised all the iconic quotes in the Scary Movie franchise (“Cindy the TV is leaking” is something I still say today). Now that nostalgia is in, the horror-parody series is back again thirteen years after the fifth film!
There is something about having the OG cast back together again that makes it feel so comforting in these trying times. The Wayans brothers couldn’t have picked a better time to return. We all need a good laugh right now.
When the movie works, it really works. There are a handful of genuine, laugh-out-loud moments that capture the chaotic magic of the original trilogy. The film is at its peak when it takes sharp, absurd swings at recent horror trends, along with tongue-in-cheek moments on current polticial times.
However, it wouldn’t be a Scary Movie without some redundant moments. For every joke that lands, there’s another that feels stuck in the past. The humuor occasionally falls into a repetitive groove, recycling old tropes and running a few gags into the ground.
Verdict: Scary Movie 6 doesn’t reinvent the game but serves as a fun trip down memory lane.
Watch it in theatres or at home? I never got to see the originals on the big screen so this felt like a homecoming. This is your chance to live out your childhood dream! I’m sure it will mean even more to those who saw the films in theatres.
There is also just something about sitting and laughing in unison with an audience.
