The Sydney indie-folk artist chats about his latest EP!

Indie-folk artist Oly Sherman has returned with stunning new EP Three Oh Three.

We had the privilege of chatting with the talented Sydney based singer to discuss the new record and his upcoming tour.

Read our full interview below.

1.    What’s your fave song atm and what sort of music/musician inspires you?

I think this would be a tie between two songs actually. The first one is called ‘Virtual U’ by a band called Oso Leone. It’s probably one of the most chilled yet ‘vibey’ songs I’ve heard in a while and I usually always put it on first thing in the morning. The other song is quite the opposite. “Freedom” by Sampa The Great, is relatively new and is just getting me so excited for what she’s cooking up in the mix!

2.    What inspired the new EP?

A variety of things. I wrote a number of the songs on the EP when I was going through a sticky patch post heart operation, and I wrote a few songs after a breakup. Despite how depressing this actually may sound, whenever I think or listen to the EP, I’m happy. It reminded me of life itself and how it can take you to say many emotional places. Definitely my most honest work to date.

3.    Plans for the rest of 2019/2020?

I’m playing about 7-8 really big shows between now and the end of the year which is really exciting. I’m also in the process of recording another EP which I’m aiming to release early next year. There might be a little tour as well 😉

4.    Favourite song off the new EP?

This has changed probably about 1000 times. I think right now, my favourite song would have to be “Noir”. Not only is the song probably the most fun to play, but it reminds me of the music that I actually listen to in the most direct way. One of my favourite bands called The War On Drugs, mixed with another favourite band of mine The Paper Kites were the absolute killer influences I had in the making of this song. Again despite the song’s rather depressing subject matter, it’s a tune that gives me a really good feeling, as I’m focused on more than just the lyrics, but rather how fun it is to play with my band.

5.    What are you currently binging on Netflix/Stan?!

Funnily enough, I’m not much of a TV/Movie fan! Instead you’ll probably see me out or relaxing with a cheeky book. However, the last show which I can remember seeing was The Handmaids Tail (My girlfriend got me absolutely hooked for a while). A really strong show with some amazing music and some heavy-duty visuals and rhetoric, its been the only show recently that’s had me hooked from start to finish!
