I think we can all agree that we love watching TV but hate the guilt trip. Ever since childhood, there is always a nagging doubt in the back of the olde brain. “Don’t sit too close; your eyes will go square.” “Stop watching TV and get some fresh air.” “Shouldn’t you be playing outside?” Yep, I probably should but I’d rather lie on the sofa binge-watching Netflix! There is a life lesson to learn here, and it’s not to listen to other people. As it turns out, television series aren’t all bad. In fact, some of them are productive. Here are four that teach us a lot about growing up.
Game Of Thrones
“Winter is coming.”
For the past five years or so, the world has heard about white walkers and the army of the dead. Finally, the build-up is going to come to ahead in the new and final season of the hit show, Game of Thrones. But, aside from the fantasy and rather immoral happenings, there are nuggets of gold. Yep, the Starks may have been getting one dimensional with their tagline “winter is coming” but it does hold true. Although they are awaiting an apocalyptic event, we are waiting for rain and bad weather. Still, it’s better to make hay while the sun shines.
Dancing With The Stars
“That was fabulous, darling!”
Not all the judges on the hit show are enthusiastic, but Bruno Tonioli always bigged up the contestants where possible. Sure, there were and will continue to be the ones who are helpless. Still, that’s life. Encouragement is not only a self-esteem booster, but it helps raise awareness of lesser activities. Arthur Murray is fighting the good fight in Australia, and Dancing with the Stars is assisting. Let’s face facts and admit waltzing isn’t the manliest of pastimes in a country that loves rugby and Aussie Rules.
IT Crowd
“Have you tried turning it off and on again?”
Technology is becoming more advanced by the day; so much so that leading minds think the robots are going to take over. Well, they may do one day, but until then we have control. Seriously, all one has to do is turn a device off and on again and the problem is no more. To be honest, if the machines are susceptible to this trick then there is nothing to worry about. Jokes aside, taking the time to restart works 75% of the time and saves us from persistent hassle.
Friends
“Pivot, pivot… pivot!!!”
Like Ross, we have all had to move furniture and found it a struggle getting it downstairs to upstairs. While he, Chandler and Rachel find themselves in a pickle, his advice is pretty spot on. If you want to get a large item through a tight space, you have to manipulate it the best you can. Pivoting a sofa helps to lift it over the pesky hurdles that are in the way, such as railings and steps. “Friends” has thousands of life lessons but there are too many to list.
What else can you learn from sitting on your backside all day?
