You’re Next (2013) Film Review

A refreshing take on the horror genre arrives..

You’re Next is just what the horror genre needed, it’s surprisingly refreshing despite it’s plot predictability.

The film revolves around a young couple who head towards a killer family reunion, in which turns out to be a horrible affair as they become ‘the next’ targets of a creepy home invasion leaded by a pack of animal masked killers.

All plot aside, the film also manages to muster in a strong message on society and it’s unmoral need for money. It looks at the brutality and lengths humans will go for it, no matter the cost. The message truly manages to hit home when Sharni Vinson’s character Erin reveals her history. And that’s about all I can say without giving too much of the plot away.

The film itself is shot superbly with an eerie music score to go along with it. It also manages to balance out the gore/blood without going into too much unnescary detail when doing so. Also the cinematography is spot on, with numerous lingering shots that are visually pleasing on-screen and truly bring home the scare factor and horrific reality this family undergoes.

When the film focuses on it’s fresh take on characters the film truly shines, but when the plot derives into familiar territory is where it fails. But all this aside, we still get an entertainingly refreshing horror flick.

VERDICT: If your sick of horror films constantly revolving around helpless victims becoming the hunted by the enemy and want to see that paradigm twisted on it’s head then this is for you! Minus ofcoarse the predictable outcome of it all.
