X-Men Dark Phoenix (2019) Film Review

Find out if the final installment in the series goes out with a bang or a whimper.

Another X-Men series has come to an end but this time much more quietly than expected and for good reason.

The latest and final chapter in this prequel/reboot hybrid series treads on familiar territory as it takes on the Dark Phoenix story-line once again.

It follows Jean Grey (played by Game of Thrones Sophie Turner) whom almost dies in a cosmic flare accident. But it all comes at a cost as Jean’s second chance at life comes with a dark twist after she inherits the flare’s sinister powers. The X-Men must then decide if they should try and save Jean or let her go.

Sounds good on paper doesn’t it?! Unfortunately it’s executed quite poorly.

20th Century Fox.

While it had such potential to add its own spin or be the most epic installment yet, something feels very off here. It seems like everyone knew Disney was about to buy them out and hastily rushed to wrap up the series to make room for the takeover.

There are some nice moments here and there dispersed throughout the choppy pacing. An honourable mention must although go out to Sophie Turner and James McAvoy who make this outing bearable as they try do what they can with the source material.

Verdict: While not a complete bore the overall solid X-Men reboot series goes out with a whimper.

Overall Rating: 5.5/10
