You’d be forgiven for thinking that the Internet is only there to help us get our media fix. Whether it’s binge watching shows on Netflix, streaming Youtube content, or downloading the latest track dropped by your favourite artist. However, the Internet has many more uses than that, and some are pretty revolutionary. You can discover more about in these in the post below.
Education
One use of the Internet that is radical is the way that pretty much anyone can access information and to a certain extent education, no matter their social class, income, or physical location.
Yes, those of us that have grown up with this are entirely used to being able to Google something and get the answer instantly, but that is not how things worked pre-World Wide Web.
In fact, in a lot of ways the Internet is not only providing entertainment through media but also making access to education a lot more equal. You even have elearning specialists that are combining education and entertainment in an attempt to make things even more effective for everybody.
Internet of things
Another use for the World Wide Web that isn’t solely about consuming media is the Internet of things. This is, for the uninitiated, a way of networking physical objects and using internet access to control them remotely, something that can help to improve efficiency and convenience.
For now, the Internet of things is mostly concerned with allowing individuals to be able to control home appliances in their own private residences, but some cities are begging to trial the idea of connecting up large urban areas through this tech too.
Of course with a tagline like, “we bring smart cities to life” it’s no surprise that its Sylvania Connected Solutions that is pioneering this work, and it’s something that could have huge positive ramifications for these cities’ residents, as well as the environment. After all, if things like street lights go off when there is no one there that needs them, an incredible amount of power can be saved!
User made content
Lastly, another revolutionary aspect of the Internet is that we as users get to not only consume the media that is provided for us but also have an active role in its creation as well.
This is most evident on sites like Youtube which is full of average everyday people making content about many different subjects from DIY, to makeup, to just vlogging about their lives!
Check out the video above for some Youtube inception on how to make your own content.
Of course, the public’s’ involvement in the creation of content is much more complicated than merely the creation of videos. In fact, it is the comments, likes, and subscription on many posts, vlogs, blogs, and sites that helps to shape what will come next. Something that means the distinction between user and co-creator is becoming more and more blurred, all thanks to the Internet!
Although don’t get us wrong, a great show that we can binge on from one of the big media providers is still one of the biggest pleasure that the World Wide Web has to offer!
