A film with a strong message on pop culture gets painfully executed.
If you happen to come across this arty little film (playing in a limited amount of theatres) you may be wondering exactly what you just watched.
The film has a Spring Breakers sort of feel, but much less graphic and much more easy to follow. But unlike Spring Breaker, The Bling Ring suffers from being a bit too simple and bland.
Much like it’s counterpart, it continuously rinses and repeats similar footage before the film reaches its climax. The repetitiveness is too noticeable as there is much less visually pleasing material in-between. There is also hardly any dialogue during the robberies either which makes it much more painful to get through.
Emma Watson as per usual manages to pull of a self-obsessed Hollywood teenager, at certain points her impersonation of her character is too over-the-top and her acting becomes too easily recognizable. Israel Brassford although, shines as quirky ring linger-assistant Marc.
Celebrity obsession gone wild (oh and over-dosage of the new-selfie obsession) is pretty much the entire point of the film in just what individuals of modern society are rapidly becoming, which is a rather fascinating subject but instead falls flat in doing so.
The main problem with the film is the utter lack of depth from its characters, we do not know much about them personally throughout the entire film other than their superficial lifestyle and fetishes leaving audiences feeling nothing towards them. Maybe that’s what director Sofia Coppola was going for, if it was.. she succeeds triumphantly in doing so.
VERDICT: If you want a much more tamed version of Spring Breakers than this is for you! But if your looking to see Emma Watson in a typical teen-style movie your bound to be disappointed by the rather lacking arty side approach on critiquing modern pop culture.
