Tom Holland stars as Spider-Man in Columbia Pictures' SPIDER-MAN™: HOMECOMING.

Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) Film Review

He’s home!

After a hit and miss reboot, Spider-Man is back for his third incarnation. This time he’s finally placed within the greater Marvel/Avengers universe.

The result? Let’s just say it’s the perfect homecoming.

This time around, we skip right past the retread of his origins and get straight into the action. There’s also a clever workaround with an explanation montage that involves Peter Parker’s (Tom Holland) quirky best friend Ned (Jacob Batalon).

Picking right up after Spidey’s appearance in Captain America: Civil War, we follow the continuation of his Iron-Man meeting. Parker has been left behind and his itching to get back into the swing of things.

Peter decides to take things into his own hands and ride solo to help protect his local neighbourhood from mysterious robberies by a winged Vulture (Michael Keaton). But does he have what it takes to make it on his own?

What makes this rendition of the classic spider hero work is the excellent portrayal of both Peter and Spider-Man. Tom Holland really channels the nerdiness of Parker and the humour of Spider-Man. There’s also a breath of fresh air with a new take on Aunt May (Marisa Tomei) and a sassy female friend added into the mix in the form of Zendaya!

The film feels very faithful to the comics, which Marvel fans will truly appreciate. For once, it feels like a natural addition rather than studios milking a tired franchise. Another bonus point is that it feels very much like its own movie and not Iron Man 4 in disguise.

But while it may feel fresh, the films youthful vibe can sometimes distance its older audience. The cast is much younger compared to previous editions of the hero but perhaps the original audience has just all grown up. It is Spidey for a new generation that still manages to entertain older audiences alike.

There is also plot-lines and scenes that bring on nostalgic feelings of the original 2002 film that kicked of the live-action version of the hero.

It certainly was the right decision to bring the web slinging superhero back to his roots and bring Spider-Man into the expanding MCU. He’s truly home!
