Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (2017) Film Review

A thrilling but flawed final ride.

Let’s be honest, Resident Evil ain’t no Oscar style flick.

The Final Chapter, the last in the franchise is no exception either as it feels very much like your typical popcorn flick.

This time around, Alice (Milla Jovovich) is determined to end things with the Umbrella corporation when the Red Queen advises her on certain misdoings within the infection-causing company and its plans to kill the remaining survivors of the apocalypse.

She must return to The Hive in Racoon City and put a stop to them once and for all!

Milla does another exceptional performance as the films heroine here, along with the notable addition of Australia’s very own, Ruby Rose. Acting is definitely up her alley and she truly owns her part here.

As for the film’s pacing, it is very videogame-esque and filled with non-stop action but it does have something to say. It touches on the state of world issues, and couldn’t come at a better time with the world ushering in a new era of politics.

It really gets you thinking just what horrors can go on behind the scenes in attempt to answer such issues as global warming and over-population.

The downside to the film is the use of shaky cam (the dreaded type where it is hard to see what is actually happening). It kind of gives whiplash in the way some of the action scenes are filmed.

Also, whoever decided to up the ante on jump scares here needed a talking too. There was far too many here! I’m all for it in small doses, but too many just seems tacky. Perhaps I’m just a scaredy cat when it comes to cheap jumps though…

Despite the faults, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter makes for a mindless (well, mostly mindless) Hollywood action blockbuster. If you love your films filled to the brink with action, then this is for you!

P.S. See it in 3D if you can,  this is one of those films that truly uses it properly.
