Red Sparrow (2018) Film Review

Steam, steam and more steam.

Jennifer Lawrence is back for another blockbuster outing!

This time around, JLaw plays Ballerina Dominika Egorov, who is forced into becoming a Russian spy by her uncle (played by Matthias Schoenaerts). From there she is sent to ‘Sparrow School’ to help turn her body into a weapon and is later sent off on a dangerous C.I.A mission.

And no, it’s not just a mindless action flick. Red Sparrow has a lot to say, both subtly and explicitly.

It particularly touches on Russia’s political climate at the moment along with international tensions between America (who Joel Edgerton smoothly represents) and particularly aims to question what it truly means to be free.

Red Sparrow is also not afraid to bare all in order to make a statement. It breaks the sexist balance of female nudity in Hollywood with more full frontal male nudity, as it explores the power of sexuality and seduction.

What doesn’t work is the film’s pacing as it’s at times choppy, making the film at times a bit hard to follow.

Verdict: While it can be a little slow, Red Sparrow is thoroughly entertaining and has something to say.

Overall Rating: 7/10
