Marrying into a new family is quite daunting and new horror flick Ready or Not proves that their is reason to be afraid. Especially when entering into families with extreme wealth.
Ready or Not tackles this huge life event in such a clever way as Grace (Samara Weaving) marries Alex (Mark O’Brien) at his family home.
Things take a dark and extremely violent turn when Grace finds herself playing a Hunger Games-esque game of Hide and Seek with her psychotic in-laws on the very night of her wedding.
Samara Weaving proves such a delight here as a desperate bride just trying to survive her wedding night alongside such deliciously evil performances by former Revenge star Henry Czerny who plays callous father-in-law Tony Le Domas and Andie MacDowell as mother-in-law Becky.
It’s not all just family matter to be dealt with here as the violent horror seems to take a jab at just what it takes to make it in today’s difficult times. What are we all willing to do when it comes to money and power? It’s a particular dilemma that is both subtly and explicitly explored throughout the film.
Verdict: A superb genre-defying horror that strikes the perfect balance between being clever, camp and nerve-racking.
If you’ve seen 2011 thriller You’re Next, this is right up your alley as it tackles a similar premise with a different twist.
