Pokémon Detective Pikachu (2019) Film Review

Will it leave you saying pika pika? Find out in our official review.

2019 is shaping up to be one of the biggest years in childhood classics making a comeback.

From Aladdin to The Lion King, Pokémon also holds a very special place on that mantle.

Set in a world where Pokemon lives amongst human kind, Pokémon Detective Pikachu follows Tim Goodman (Justice Smith) as he searches for his father who goes missing after a devastating laboratory accident.

Upon returning home Tim discovers the adorable Pikachu (voiced by Ryan Reynolds), who vows to help find his father. As the two partner up in a buddy cop style caper, they discover that the harmony of the human-mon utopia is under threat from big business and a monopolised media. They require the ingenue of eager journo intern Lucy Stevens (Kathryn Newton) and a neurotic Psyduck to delve deeper into the urban quest and discover a super effective way to stop the sinister evolution of Pokémon.

It’s always a gamble bringing to life a childhood classic but Detective Pikachu somehow hits all the right notes. There is nostalgia, humour, drama and plenty of twists along the way to keep fans happy. There’s also enough Easter Eggs and lore for the players of the game. Bravo!

The CGI also deserves a mention here as they beautifully bring to life some of our fave 90’s characters. They look like actual living animals…

Plot holes and predictability aside the films makes for a fun return to the world of Pokémon.

Verdict: Detective Pikachu is one of those rare films which actually does justice to its original source material. A must-see for the whole family.

Overall Rating: 8/10
