Oceans 8 (2018) Film Review

The verdict is in.

At long last, the all female Oceans sequel has arrived!

After the wild success of its predecessors, the focus now shifts to a brand new group of masterminds led by Sandra Bullock, who plays Debbie Ocean.  She’s a woman fresh out of prison who is on a mission to carry out the ultimate and somewhat timely heist in history at NYC’s annual Met Gala.

To carry out her million dollar plan, she bands together a team of clever and super smart individuals that just happen to be played by Rihanna, Cate Blanchet, Helena Bonham Carter, Sarah Paulson, Mindy Kaling, and Anne Hathaway. The billing here alone is almost worth the cost of the $150 million necklace that they are so eager to snatch.

From there, we follow the ladies work together and become one badass team. The chemistry between the team is sublime and somehow does not lose focus or structure throughout its two hour runtime despite having such a large cast bill. More often than not, films struggle to create a connection with its characters or even give them proper development when there is plenty of them to work with. Looking at you Valentine’s Day and New Year’s Day

But despite having an impressive ensemble, the film lacks any real substance. It is your typical heist movie with a few nods chucked in to previous films in the series.

Needless to say, don’t go in expecting some groundbreaking masterpiece. Enjoy it for what it is, a fun blockbuster that offers viewers a glamourised version of pursuing a life of crime.

Danny Ocean himself would approve.

Verdict: A superb cast help elevate a simple plot in this stylish new all-female Oceans entry.

Overall Rating: 7/10
