Movie Review: Edge Of Seventeen (2016)

Growing up can be hard sometimes.

Growing up can be hard sometimes, especially when you are the black sheep of the family.

Nadine (Haillee Steinfeld) is just that, as her brother (Blake Jenner) seems to have everything – the school status, mother’s favouritism and all that jazz. Things change though when she befriends Krista (Haley Lu Richardson) but then everything is ruined yet again when her brother gets with her best friend.

Edge of Seventeen is a breathe of fresh air, especially the way it deals with depression and suicide. It does a superb job in taking care with such sensitive issues by being both serious and humorous in depicting them.

Steinfeld is a stand-out here as she truly captures and delivers a believable quirky and miserable teenage girl struggling to fit in. Woody Harrelson also serves as notable teacher/ sort-of therapist who she confides in to help sort out her problems.

The only downside to the indie flick is that it follows typical teen coming-of-age formulae. Still, it does make for an entertaining and humorous watch despite seeing most moves from a mile away.

Rating: 6.5/10
