The coming of age story of 2018 has arrived!
Love, Simon joins the mainstream ranks of coming of age stories that tackle LGBTQ issues and the struggle to be one’s true self.
It revolves around Simon (Nick Robinson) who is struggling to come out as gay. He finds solace in anonymity with another mysterious guy who bravely reveals via social media that he too is gay and attends the very same school as Simon. From there we embark on an emotional rollercoaster of tears, joy and heartbreak. It does so with perfect balance and extreme delicacy.
The film itself takes on a diary format as we get to experience everything through Simon’s eyes. His story manages to keep you interested from the get-go and cleverly keeps you guessing just who the mysterious figure he constantly confides in is.
Nick Robinson is simply perfect as Simon, and does a great job in pulling on the heartstrings and connecting with audiences. Katherine Langford perfectly plays the best friend and marks the second major teen project for the 13 Reasons Why star. Jennifer Garner and Josh Duhamel also make for an interesting parent combo as both bring differing parenting perspectives to the table.
Verdict: A touching tale of acceptance and love that will hit you right in the feels.
