If I Stay (2014) Film Review

Touching drama on self-sacrifice and death…

‘Another teeny emotional movie’ you may think when watching the trailer or seeing the posters for this film. But If I Stay is far from it… yes it may have its typical share of teeny love drama, but there’s much more deep material to be seen here.

The film revolves around Mia, a girl who is different to her family as she shares a passion for the cello.
We are then introduced to a love interest shortly after, before a tragic family accident occurs.
From there on, viewers then get to know and understand those involved in Mia’s life, leading to the accident as she reflects on her life whilst she watches over unconscious herself (think Just Like Heaven).

Self-sacrifice is a key message here, as it delivers a touching message on individuals giving up their lives, all in the name of love. Not only does this tug on the heart-strings, just look at the title ‘If I Stay‘, it embodies our choices and why we make them. While you may think there’s nothing or no one left for you in this world, there’s always something to live for.. wether that be for yourself or for others.

Pacing is although something the film struggle with, at  times it sometimes drags when it decides to fall into all the typical sappy stuff. It doesn’t help when their is a constant use of lingering angst shots of Mia and Adam.  If more time was spent on the films central themes it would of made pacing here a little less disjointed, or a simple trim would of helped.

Scenery is superb here, with beautiful snowy landscapes along with top-notch music including beautiful cello performance’s from Chloe Moretz’s character Mia, who in turn also shines in bringing the character alive. Her boyfriend, Adam (Jamie Blackley) is not to shabby himself vocally.

VERDICT: A somewhat teeny love drama that offers more valuable life lessons than the usual teen fluff.

It’s full of heart and will leave viewers in a state of gratefulness and inspiration, despite its (at times) painful pacing.

Overall Rating:

7/10
