What would you do if you woke up ninety years too early during space hibernation?
Well, Passengers answers just that. It all goes down when a spaceship travelling to a brand new planet from earth malfunctions, causing two passengers to wake up way before their arrival date. Mind you, they are already thirty years away from home…
Such an interesting concept is executed quite well here, despite a few cliché Hollywood fluff. It really gets you thinking about the dilemmas we could face if galaxy travel ever comes into fruition.
A play on the typical stranded on an island scenario indeed and one that provides food for thought. Could we eventually be able to travel through time?
It’s not a entirely new concept, as many have discussed the possibility of space-travel. What makes Passengers stand out is that it brings the idea to life, providing for an entertaining ride throughout.
There is also moral questioning thrown into the mix as to why they left earth in the first place. The planet seems perfectly intact and touches on what they have left behind for self discovery. Is it really worth starting a new life when most of your loved ones will be gone by the time you arrive? Or is it just for self accomplishment?
Analysis aside, Jennifer Lawrence (Aurora) and Chris Pratt (Jim) are the perfect leads as they can act the hell out of any role they are given. It also helps that they share such a bubbly chemistry together on screen.
Visuals are also such a treat and comes complete with a conclusion full of suspense that will have you biting your nails.
Call me a sucker but Passengers is a fun space joyride.
