Topic is one of the hottest artists in Australia right now. The German-Croatian DJ garnered amazing success with “Home” which went platinum on the ARIA charts along with “Breaking Me” with A7S which went 4x platinum here.
The talented music producer who had over 1 billion streams in 2021 recently visited Down Under for his whirlwind first tour across the country. Topic sat down with Media Hype Australia to discuss his massive success and opened up about what’s to come. Read our full interview below:
- Welcome to Australia – was this your first time here?
Topic: No, it actually was my second time. I was here 2017 and I instantly fell in love with the country. I was very excited to be back and also play a tour, which was a first for me! It has been a great experience and a huge milestone in my career.
- How has your experience been playing shows in Australia so far?
Topic: The Australian crowd definitely is something else! I described it on one of my Instagram posts as mad (check it out and you´ll know what I mean by that), you guys definitely go crazy and you also like to drink a lot I guess.
- Breaking Me was a massive hit here – what was it like experiencing that level of
success in Australia? And how did that song come about?
Topic: It’s great and at the same time a surreal experience to come to the other side of the world, Down Under, and realise that everyone knows ‘Breaking Me’. The song came about with my man A7S. We were working, just like in a regular songwriting session. We just free-styled some melodies and one of the melodies was the ‘LaLaLa’ part and from there on we built the track.
- My Heart Goes (La Di Da) has become a global sensation. What was it like working with Becky Hill?
Topic: Yeah, I am very happy about the ‘My Heart Goes (La Di Da) track! Actually, I got it sent over to me in 2020 – right at the beginning of the pandemic. Back then Becky’s team asked me if I wanted to do additional production and finish some tracks of her album. One of the tracks was ‘My Heart Goes’, which I finished in just a few days. After that it was basically laying around for almost one year. Becky and her team were so happy about the result, they came up and asked if we could do the track together. And then I listened to it back again and thought ‘damn that’s a good song’! I am really happy that it came out and that the people also like it.
- Another huge collab was with Bebe Rexha – How did that collaboration come together?
Topic: The collab with Bebe Rexha came together when A7S and I wrote a song and it was funny because we directly could hear that Bebe Rexha would be the perfect fit for that track. We sent it out to her team and thankfully she also loved it. As we couldn’t travel to do it in person, we had a couple of Zoom sessions with her and that’s how we finished the song.
- Any exciting new projects coming up in the future?
Topic: Yeah, I got a really exciting new song, which is coming out in June! If you were at my shows recently there is a good chance you got to listen to it already. I can’t tell which it is yet though.
