South African singer, Jeremy Loops is gearing up to release his new album ‘Critical As Water’ with the first single, ‘Waves’ already mustering over 1 million streams! The hit song was even produced by Will Hicks who worked on Ed Sheeran’s ‘Perfect’.
Loops chatted exclusively with us to discuss ‘Waves’, his upcoming tour and more!
1. Fave current song and inspirations?
I really enjoy this song Day To Day for 6 Days a Week by an artist caller L.A. Salami. I’m inspired by life. What I see around me. The changing times.
2. What inspired Waves?
Waves. No, seriously. I had been having a tough time writing my second album, and at breaking point, I decided to stop pushing myself unreasonably hard to get the thing done by some unrealistic deadline nobody but I controlled. So I went surfing instead of bashing my head against the wall in studio, and I allowed myself the time to relax. I think, in that moment, in the water, just feeling relaxed and restored for the first time in months, something changed for me in the project. As soon I stepped out the ocean, I went back to studio and wrote Waves.
3. Most memorable concert?
That’s a tough one. We play roughly 100 shows a year, so there’s a few to choose from. Two immediately spring to mind, though. We once played a sold out headline show to 7000 odd people in Durban in South Africa. That set’s energy and pacing was pitch perfect. It was amazing.
And then we played the main stage at Lollapalooza Paris last year, which had a bumper lineup. We were definitely punching above what people perceived to be our weight, sharing the stage with The Roots, Skepta, and The Weeknd. It felt really significant, and was also a watershed moment for this act’s prospects.
4. And major plans for 2018?
2018 itself is one long major plan. Haha. My new album Critical As Water comes out March 16. We then have a world tour across Africa, Europe, North America, and in Australia and New Zealand from the end of March until the end of May. Then it’s festival season. I’m pretty sure we’ll have another major tour before the year’s up or early 2019. And all the while, I’ll be criss-crossing across the globe to promote the album and make great content for it. It really is the year of Critical As Water for our team.
5. What was your experience like touring with Twenty One Pilots?
More than anything, I see that Twenty One Pilots tour as validation. They’re obviously superstars now in a way they weren’t then, but honestly, when we toured with them, they were at the beginning of their hyper growth phase. What was most validating about that tour was we never at any point felt like we couldn’t perform at the level or to the standard they had set. We felt at home in the rooms we were playing with them, roughly 1000 to 3000 capacity, which is the sizes we’re headlining currently. Above and beyond that, it was just a really enjoyable tour to play, and hanging with the TOP band was great fun.
‘Critical As Water’ will be available to stream and purchase on March 16th. Pre-order it here.
