Britney Spears is back with her fifth studio album and manages to provide just enough Britney we all know and love to the table, with a bit of freshness. Just don’t expect any self re-invention on this one..
1. Alien : A Perfect way to kick off the album. It’s chilled, it’s mellow and has a catchy hook to go along with it. This one should get everyone swaying! Potential radio hit maybe? (4.5/5)
2. Work B*tch: The lead single is something fresh from Britney, probably the most dangerous first single as its an experimental change in music style. But all risks aside, this song is something fresh and unique that makes you fall sucker to it’s over-stereotyped lyrics. (3.8/5)
3. Perfume: This has been along-time coming, classic Britney ballads return! The last memorable emotion-heavy track i remember from her is Everytime. Ofcoarse the song is penned by no other than catapulting song-writer Sia (who recently wrote the opening track ‘Pretty Hurts’ for Beyonce’s new album). The lyrics are kind of cheesy though, and takes a while to grow on you but overall the simplicity of it all makes for a catchy emotion driven ballad. (4/5)
4. It Should Be Easy: What a shame. This song show’s huge potential within segments of the song, but that auto tune just ruins it. Minus that horrid element, this song could of been another hit. (2.5/5)
5. Tik Tik Boom: Another potential radio smash here! It’s Katy Perry’s ‘Dark Horse’ meets Lady Gaga’s ‘Jewels & Drugs’, yes there has been a pattern of the pop girls releasing urban tracks featuring famous rappers. Britney pulls it off well alongside T.I in this one and delivers a hell of a catchy song that will remain in your head for days! (4.2/5)
6. Body Ache: A little fun generic club-filler. That’s about all I can say for this one. (3/5)
7. Til It’s Gone: Another generic forgetabble tune, but it somehow manages to be fun. Why does Britney constantly do this?! Making these generic tracks but getting us to enjoy it at the same time..(3/5)
8. Passenger: This is by far my favourite song on the album, it’s something different for Britney and is catchy as heck with cleverly written lyrics to go along with it. It is by far no generic casual Britney track! Props to Katy Perry for helping pen the track. (5/5)
9. Chillin With You: One of the corniest and cheesiest tracks on the album, but somehow i really dig it. It’s a kind of Disney-ish sort of track, also featuring her sister Jamie Lynn adds to that image (famous for Nickelodeon teen show Zoey 101). Take it for what it is, a bubblegum innocent little track. (4/5)
10. Don’t Cry: Another emotion heavy sort of song but lacks the oomph that Perfume carries. It’s still a good track though, despite it’s excruciating slow pace. (3/5)
Deluxe Tracks:
11. Brightest Morning Star: Kind of cheesy Britney yet again, it also has a church sort of vibe for some reason. It’s okay but lacks any memorability. (2.5/5)
12. Hold On Tight: Meh, another generic slow paced track that comes across as another messy lyrical attempt. It screams bonus track, good choice whoever decided to make it one. (2.2/5)
13. Now That I Found You: A vulnerable confused Britney shines on this track, I would argue with whoever decided to make this a bonus track! The track has huge radio potential.. plus it carries resonance with Avicii’s ‘Wake Me Up’. (4.5/5)
