The Chainsmokers ‘Memories… Do Not Open’ (2017) Album Review

Pure EDM joy.

The Chainsmokers have come a long way since their “Selfie” days.  They no longer just produce dance-floor jams, they can sing too!

Breaking charts everywhere with their pop hit, “Closer” featuring Halsey, they have managed to avoid the one- off viral sensation fate.

Their first album showcases their revamp with most tracks led vocally by producer duo, Andrew Taggart and Alex Pall.

While they have been criticised as the Nickelback (arguably the butt of all music genre jokes) of EDM, the duo should be praised for being true to the genre. They keep in line with what they know and play around with what they have. And really, why can’t the world have cheesy pop EDM?

Although, the deeper cuts is truly where The Chainsmokers shine as it showcases a different side to their EDM style.

“It Won’t Kill Ya” is certainly the biggest example of this as it’s probably one of the biggest breakaways from the duo’s usual style.

Another unique collaboration on the EP outing is with Coldplay, and the result is an amazing dance floor anthem. Clubs are already eating it up and rightly so!

Emotions also run high here as their lyrics deal with the emotions of youth and love. “Young” embodies this with the simplistic but punchy lines of “but it’s hard when you’re young.”

They even manage to go pop-rock on mixed signal relationship track, “Break Up Every Night.”

While there is a batch of interesting new styles from the DJ duo, it does get tiresome in the middle of the album with similar sounding tracks. Collaborations with Emily Warren sound a little to like their usual flare.

More experimentation is the key, like joining forces with unexpected artists and dark style music flavours like those heard on Louane’s track.

Best Tracks: The One, Something Just Like This, It Won’t Kill Ya, Young, Bloodstream.

Overall Rating: 7/10
