Logan (2017) Film Review

Farewell Hugh Jackman!

Hugh Jackman’s long swan song to his successful X-Men character, Logan aka Wolverine, is here! A role which helped establish his name in Hollywood, and one that many recognise him for.

For the final time around, Logan is at his weakest ever with a poison infecting him throughout the film. It’s difficult for him to fight, let alone heal from gruesome and violent attacks.

Weakened as he may be, he is also looking after an unwell Professor Xavier/Charles (Patrick Stewart) and a super-powerful mini female version of himself,  X-23.

That’s pretty much about all I can say without revealing too much or spoiling the rest of the plot.

The higher rating is also well earned here indeed with plenty of violent moments, rolled heads and a bucket load of cursing.  It’s the Deadpool of The Wolverine saga, without the nudity.

It is certainly a great send off for Jackman as he gets to be a grittier version of the character which has been foreshadowed in previous X-Men films. He’s much more stripped back and has a raw vulnerability.

Logan in itself is quite dark, despite its many humorous moments. It shows no resilience and is not afraid to up the anti where necessary.

It’s not flawless though, as it sometimes feels over-long with constant action sequences thrown in for the sake of it (maybe to justify its rating?) or unnecessary scenes with the film’s antagonists. It works best when it focuses on  Logan and his interactions with Xavier and young mutant, Laura (Dafne Keen).

Verdict: While an entertaining and more mature final outing, it can sometimes grow tiring due to its long run-time and constant fight sequences. But what it does best, is honour Jackman’s legacy and lets his character go out in a fitting finale.

Overall Rating: 7/10
