Just a couple days after the release of The Hunger Games, which has become the third highest opening weekend of all time and currently remains at the top of the charts worldwide has received racist criticism from fans as the casting of Rue played by Amanda Stenberg has sparked some controversy.
Upset fans have tweeted such things as “Why does Rue have to be black? Not gonna lie kinda ruined the movie.” Another fan wrote, “Why is Rue a little black girl? #sticktothebookDUDE.” and Why did the producer make all the good characters black?” Another person wrote, “I’m still pissed that Rue is black”, while there was also someone who tweeted, “Ewwww Rue is blac?? I’m not watching.” One other Twitter user added, “Awkward moment when Rue is some black girl and not the innocent blonde girl you picture.”
This is surely wrong, as the book described the character of having ‘dark brown skin’.. this is very offensive to the actress and to the cast and crew of the film and anyone who hears such complaints.
I think it is very wrong of fans to criticize the actress and the casting crew based on her race or ethnicity.
There has also been some criticism of characters Cinna and Thresh based on the same racist remarks.
What do you guys think of this? Sound off in the comments.
