Rom-Coms Get Real?
Okay got around to watching this small little teen flick and well it was surprisingly one of the most realistic takes I’ve seen on adolescence, relationships and sex.
The film’s main stars include Teen Wolf’s Stiles aka Dylan O’Brien and The Secret Circle alumni Britt Robertson who play little teen couple, Aubrey and Dave who struggle to find out the true meaning of love.
Sound like another predictable rom-com? Well it’s not with it’s take on teen romance and especially sex being as real as it gets. It delivers a strong message on the unrealistic expectations teens (and individuals as a whole) make about relationships and sex, to not give up when little things don’t turn out the way you imagined. If that’s not enough, the leading couple also share some really great chemistry together.
The film’s only fault is it’s pacing, it is incredibly slow! Especially the opening scene being largely revolved around the couple meeting each other and talking outside a party. It’s just too long and can be quite off-putting, I myself thought about turning it off until the ball finally got rolling once other characters came into play… glad I didn’t.
Overall, if your sick of the usual rom-com teen flick and want to see it tackled with a different approach then give this a go. Try not let the lengthy opening dialogue put you off though as you might miss out on something great.
