Childhood monsters return for some good ol’ nostalgia..
When I heard there was going to be a follow-up to childhood favourite Monsters, Inc. I was over the moon, but when they said it was a prequel I was totally letdown.. I wanted to know what happened to Boo when she got older!
But after viewing the film I was really surprised how Pixar managed to capture the magic we fell in love with from the first film. Although not as great as it’s predecessor it manages to re-capture elements seen in the first outing including Mike’s (Billy Crystal) usual personality, his bubbling/on and off again relationship with Sully (John Goodman), we also get some back-story on why Randall (Steve Buscemi) turned to the dark side in Monsters, Inc.
The film at it’s heart is classic Pixar stuff, in that the underdog get’s his moment to shine! I’m sure most of the audience will sympathise and feel sorry for poor Mike and his OK (Oozma Kappa) fraternity as they struggle to prove their scary and enter the menacing Dean Hardscrabble (Helen Mirren) scare program.
I think a prequel was a smart move on Pixar’s part as it allowed the series to explore the roots of the character’s relationships as a sequel may have failed to gain any momentum due to the character’s heading in different paths and Boo being all grown up. What would they talk about in a follow-up? How successful their lives are? It’s a particular fail that many animated sequel films (pointing at you Cars 2) seem to do.. so It was a smart move on Pixar’s part! That goes without saying, that I still missed Boo though.
Verdict: If you want to regain some of the old nostalgic childhood memories of Monsters, Inc. then Monsters University is your film, but if your looking for something new from Pixar or something different from the Monsters, Inc. gang then your out of luck here.
