Unexpected gem of the year?
I had no clue as to what this movie was about, let alone who was in it until I was invited by my own local cinema to see it. What a lucky random invite it was..
The film revolves around 4 individual magicians who magically come together via tarot cards leading to a secret organisation called ‘The Eye’, they are then catapulted into creating their very own show where their very first act gets the FBI on there tail by miraculously robbing a bank.
No it’s not as corny as it sounds, minus the blatant Pepsi product placement shown in an early scene of the film. Behind this little gem is some well balanced mystery, intrigue and heart.
I must say the cast ensemble was also well thought, with a variety of different big A-listers (The Avenger‘s Mark Ruffalo to The Social Network‘s Jesse Eisenberg) thrown in the mix. The cinematography though, looks kind of cheesy though with the colouring and style being very generic. Also shaky cam is a big no-no in cinema, it just makes viewers distracted and dizzy. Haven’t we learned this already from The Hunger Games already? Remarkably the film uses such techniques during Haymitch aka Woody Harrelson scenes quite often, a nicely done inside-joke camera man!(if it was intentional).
One thing that particularly stands out in the film is conspiracy as it explores the very knowledge of fooling the mind and tricking individuals into one’s own game. It looks at just how such powers can be used for good and evil but does it in a very subtle and inexplicit way.
VERDICT: If you loved Inception, this is right up your alley with an added touch of mystery, heart, action and a twist many will not see coming. Also if you love all things that deal with conspiracies such as those to do with secret societies than this just might appeal to you too.
