Marvel delivers one of its bests, with yet another Avenger.

Marvel

What a suprise! I had low expectations for this film as the first outing of the first avenger was a little lackluster. The Winter Soldier although, is a far more captivating superhero tale and is full of thrills and yes, surprises.

The film, directed by Anthony Russo and Joe Russo takes place after the happenings of The Avengers. Captain America (Chris Evans) has adjusted to the modern times after struggling to deal with the time-travel change, he even now keeps a list to keep track of the latest pop culture he needs to catch up on. But all is not easy breezy for the buffed up hero as S.H.I.E.L.D. is threatened from within, along with having to face a deadly assassin called The Winter Soldier. Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) also tags along and helps him out on his mission, along with new hero addition ‘Falcon’ (Anthony Mackie).

Modern issues again resurface within hero films (familiarly seen in the recent adaption of Robocop) as the Marvel film deals with security protection. It touches on the extreme measures of anilating thousands of innocent people along the way, in order to protect the world. It adds a certain human touch to the otherwise typical superhero-action flare.

Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson throughout the film share some unremarkable chemistry together. It’s actually the first time we get to explore The Captain and Black Widow’s friendship, and thanks to Evans and Johansson we see a great alliance form between the two, possible even more.. (I wonder what Hawkeye would have to say about this). Also, Samuel L. Jackson has some classic one-liners, as he again brings his cool to Nick Fury.

Captain America (Chris Evans) and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) form a remarkable alliance..
Or could there possibly be something more to it?

Television lovers, there’s also some major kicks for you to have here as it’s full of current actors/actresses from the small screen. Most notably Revenge‘s Emily Van Camp, who stunningly resembles her character on the show (an empowered action woman). She fits right in on the big screen, I just wish they would of given her more screen-time!

Also other note-worthy appearances is the bumped-up role for Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill, who relatively was a small character in The Avengers. I guess now that How I Met Your Mother is done she has time for other projects like this. She deserves the extra screen-time though, as she manages to pull off the S.H.I.E.L.D. agent amazingly.

There’s more TV guest appearances, but you’ll just have to see the film to find out.

TV favourites make an appearance in Winter Solider,  Revenge‘s Emily VanCamp among them.

If your dying to see a superhero flick with a bit more oomph, Captain America: The Winter Soldier is the perfect choice. It’s probably one of the best Marvel films to date. It blends all the usual visual treats we get from superhero flicks with an engaging and well-written story alongside characters audiences can connect with.

Also stick around for the credits, with not one but two easter eggs for Marvel fans to rejoice in.

Overall Rating:

8.5/10
