Ex-Gossip Girl actor Leighton Meester has released a new independent album entitled Heartstrings. It is said to be a folk album dealing with all topics pertaining to love and with irony, which is a step away from her electro-pop beginnings.
Since working with ‘Check in the Dark’ in 2010, Meester’s style has become a lot more relaxed and sweeter. Heartstrings shows the full capacity of her voice sans auto-tune with pared back instrumental parts.
The feel of the album is certainly easy listening, which calls to mind other singer-songwriters such as Norah Jones, Jack Johnson, and Sarah Blasko. Heartstrings has a slight country vibe, and is a little reminiscent of the 90s, rendering it quite unique.
“Heartstrings” the title track, is catchy without being clichéd and is evocative and delicate. If you require a languishing post break-up song, this is it. Most tracks on album are best suited to sunny afternoons, see “Dreaming” for an ethereal, romantic track or the entrancing, well-titled “Blue Afternoon”.
