Our favourite gaming marsupial Crash Bandicoot makes wumpa of a return after 20 years

The platforming, level-traversing marsupial Crash Bandicoot is back.

The platforming, level-traversing marsupial Crash Bandicoot is back.

In his first game after 10 years, and first true sequel in two decades to 1998’s Crash Bandicoot Warped, the orange bandicoot will spin and jump his way to launch on October 2.

Set after the events of Crash Bandicoot Warped that saw foes Neo Cortex, Dr. N. Tropy and Uka Uka stranded on a distant planet, the game will be available on PS4 and XboxOne. This time around, the 3 villains will rip a hole in the fabric of space-time to escape their remote planet and unleash havoc on the multiverse. Pivoting between heroes Crash and Coco (at any time in the game), they will battle bosses with the help of the Quantum Masks that hold space and time together. Yes, the spirit of Aku Aku is truly alive and well.

Co-head of Toys for Bob Paul Yan, the studio responsible for Crash 4’s release, spoke to Polygon about the importance of returning to the style of the original trilogy. We deliberately called this game Crash 4,” Yan said, “because we want to position this as a true sequel to the original three games, which were developed by Naughty Dog. There’s something really, really special about those first three games, and you could see that reflected both critically and commercially.”

He’s not wrong.

In developing the fourth installment to the original and beloved franchise, the team at Toys for Bob adopted a back to basics approach.

By firing up old consoles to play the classic originals with, comparing them to recent remasters, and gathering the all-important fan feedback from the diverse Crash Community, the team had the tools in place for a new game.

Old meets new with a re-imagined art style, new gameplay mechanics and the inventive ability to pivot between modern and retro modes of play.

Prepare for an intense, immersive experience that expands upon the established zany world with lush vistas, new seascapes and a variety of new enemies and hazards that are expected for the 2020 gamer.

As the Crash games that followed the original trilogy were more focused around the party, hack and slash and racing genres, it will be fun to just get back on the platform.

And really, it is about time.
