Mulan: Disney

22 thoughts about Disney’s new Mulan adaptation

Does it bring honour to the original?

It will be 22 years since the original 1998 animation Mulan is released and to celebrate, we are going to voice our thoughts on the live action remake to see whether it brings honour to us all.

Spoiler: this guy does not feature.

If you haven’t already, watch the trailer below and see if your thoughts match ours.

  1. They mention a phoenix providing guidance, but there’s no Mushu?
  2. Is that white cross style make up actually appealing to male suitors?
  3. Mulan’s father mentions a phoenix being beautiful and strong, but then changes his tune to bringing honour to the family. What do you want in a wife, dad?
  4. Northern Invaders are attacking? Just call them the Huns!
  5. Bori Khan is the new foe? Shan Yu was just as terrifying a name.
  6. Oh, but he fights alongside a witch so this is where the femme fatale comes in to combat our warrior princess. Got it.
  7. Also, she can use magic to fight (which the audience is wiling to buy) but we can’t get a magical dragon Mushu? Huh?
  8. Jet Li is the Emperor? Did not picture him in a passive role at all. Like he’s a martial artist and he’s just going to sit there?
  9. The army just saw Mulan’s father fall over and are still okay with him as a soldier?
  10. Mulan’s mother straight up tells her daughters that their Dad will not return, and they’re meant to just accept this?
  11. Where did she learn to weave a sword like that?
  12. Her parents aren’t furious? Mine would probably march up to the ary and tell me off in front of everyone.
  13. Ha Jun is her soldier alias? What was wrong with Ping?
  14. Love how they reference making men out of the soldiers without singing ‘I’ll Make a Man out of you.’
  15. That witch has an unfair battle in war, honestly.
  16. This is not Narnia.
  17. The Commander knows something’s not quite right with Mulan.
  18. The way she dodges that flying spear on her horse!
  19. She actually comes face to face with the witch, who knows she’s a woman.
  20. Why not just kill her on the spot?
  21. She’s running on the roof of the pagoda, just like in the original!
  22. One more reference to bringing honour to us all. How many non-musical nods are we going to get here?
