REVIEW: Charlie’s Angels are reborn in glamorous new 2019 update

Good morning, Charlie!

Charlie and his angels are back in business!

It has been 19 years since Cameron Diaz, Lucy Liu and Drew Barrymore graced our screens as modern day Angels in 2000’s Charlie’s Angels. They at the time offered a new generation of fans a new breed of women spies after the original series of the same name in the 70’s.

Now, a new cycle has been put into motion with Kristen Stewart (Sabina), Naomi Scott (Elena) and Ella Balinska (Jane) who band together to save the world when a dangerous new technology falls into the wrong hands.

Bosley also makes a return as the girl’s go-to leading assistant. This time in the form of an entire army of Bosley’s, including a female Bosley played by Elizabeth Banks whom also directs the film – what a woman!

What really works for this reboot/continuation is that it has been updated for today’s audience, whereas its previous films have not aged as gracefully.

Of course there is cheese to be had in the 2019 version but that early noughties over the top action has been toned way down.

Gone are the days where Cameron, Lucy and Drew can miraculously fly around LA on Christmas lights to chase down baddie at the time, Demi Moore. Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle ring a bell anyone?

The soundtrack also matches the style of the film, with Ariana Grande’s more poppy soundtrack replacing the more grungy sounds of The Prodigy used in earlier installments.

For those who grew up with the previous two films, this 2019 update may come across a little too PC but it does have something to say as it tries to offer a more modern way of thinking.

2019’s Charlie’s Angels does not try to replace its ancestors, in fact it even gives a clever nod to the Angels who’ve come before. It merely pushes forward a new generation of Angels whom embody the modern female of today and beyond.

Verdict: Nostalgia and modernity collide in this entertaining reboot of the world’s most iconic spy girl trio.
