Aladdin (2019) Film Review

It’s a whole new world.

Disney has done it again! Another live-adaptation of one of their classics is here.

This time around it is the beloved Aladdin from Agrabah.

With just a tiny bit of changes the film retells the timeless story of Aladdin (Mena Massoud), a kind-hearted boy whom steals for survival. He one day fatefully meets Princess Jasmine (Naomi Scott) and from there his life is changed forever as the evil Jafar (Marwan Kenzari) later captures him as prisoner to carry out a dangerous mission to retrieve a magical lamp.

Disney

Updates to the original source material are a given here to keep up with the current political climate and Disney does so with ease here. The changes make sense and create a more attainable realism which can be quite hard when translating a beloved animated flick to human form.

It helps that Mena and Naomi share such a bubbly chemistry that you can’t help but fall in love them. Will Smith also proves a delight as Genie whom also shares such a great bond with Mena on-screen. Superb casting if you ask me…

Also a honourable mention needs to be made for the film’s soundtrack. The updated versions of “A Whole New World”, “Friend Like Me”, “Prince Ali” and “Arabian Nights” mirror the original with just a tad bit of modernity. Bravo!

Verdict: The 2019 version of Aladdin does the original animated classic justice and in doing so introduces a new generation to a whole new world.

Overall Rating: 9/10
