The Hate U Give (2018) Film Review

Does the political teen drama do its subject matter justice?

Is the law just? It is a timeless question many ponder and one new political teen flick The Hate U Give gives a soundboard to.

The film follows Starr (Amandla Stenberg) who witnesses the traumatic shooting of childhood best friend Khalil (Algee Smith) at the hands of a U.S. police officer.

Following his shocking death, Starr is faced with the dilemma to speak out and face the deadly consequences of her community or break the cycle, consequences be damned. It is very timely given the recent events of Corey Jones and the overall American political climate that is divisive at best when discussing racial attacks in custody or during arrest.

At its heart, the George Tillman Jr. directed flick is all about the mistreatment of the law when it comes to race. It brings to light the harsh realities that we still face today despite society’s ‘progress’. There is still much to be done for equality across the board!

It captures such subject matter with excellence and precision while still making it palatable for today’s youth but is also not shy in being confrontational when it needs to be. Topped with a talented teen cast with leading lady Amandla Stenberg, current hot property KJ Apa and Disney turned pop star Sabrina Carpenter, The Hate U Give is a real winner.

‘Riverdale’ heartthrob KJ Apa (Chris) alongside leading lady and love interest in the film, Amanadla Stenberg (Starr).

Verdict: A powerful and politically charged teen flick that raises an important discussion for the new generation to mull over.
