Could You Really Make Your Own Movie?

What you need to know.

If you truly love movies, it’s likely that at some point or another you have thought about making your own. But whether or not you have actually gone through with it and seen it through to completion is something else altogether. Actually, the truth is that making your own movie is a long and dedicated process, even if you are going to be going about it in the relatively simple way. But as long as you understand a number of the basic aspects of movie-making, there is no reason you shouldn’t be able to make something that you can be truly proud of. In this article, we are going to discuss a number of the considerations you will need to think about in order to make sure that you can make exactly the movie you want to make. You might be surprised at the kind of quality film you can end up producing.

As with many projects, you will find things considerably easier if you are first able to know what your budget is going to be, so make sure that you are aware of this first and foremost. The truth is that your budget will dictate to a large degree what you can and cannot do, so you will need to make sure that you are aware of how much money you are likely to be able to scare together if you want to get this right. If you are just making a small home movie with not much casting and so on going on, it is likely you won’t have much of a budget. But in any case, it is something that you will need to think about if you are going to know where to begin from, so it is the first thing you need to be aware of here.

A common issue here is not really knowing how much things are likely to cost, which makes sense if you have never made a movie before. However by researching what you need to and asking around for quotes, you should be able to discover what you are likely to pay for most things. Once you have a general guide, you can then write it down in as much detail as possible, and see whether there is anything you might want to miss out on or even choose to include. The more accurately you do this, the more likely it is that you will be able to make your movie, so this is an extremely important point to consider.

Once you are aware of what kind of amount of money you will need, it is time to start thinking about actually finding that cash, which is a whole other issue altogether.

Getting The Funding

If you have ever looked into business or any other kind of expensive project, you will be aware that there are many sources for funding to be had, but that they are not necessarily all as easy to come by as you might hope. Obviously, a lot of funding sources are highly competitive, and you will benefit hugely from being able to talk about your upcoming movie project with great passion and thoroughly researched understanding. That will help you greatly when it comes to actually pitching to those who might be able to provide you with the funding you need.

As for where to actually look for that funding, you likely have a number of options available, and it is good to try out a few if you want to keep your chances of success up. You might go to a local arts council or a government grant type funding, or you might just be on the lookout for a wealthy investor who is likely to believe in what you are doing. If you are keeping things very small scale, you could even fund it yourself – or by raising a little help using crowdsourcing websites like Kickstarter.

However you raise the dough, you should consider it an essential step towards making your movie, as without it you are unlikely to be able to put anything together at all.

Sourcing Equipment

There is likely to be a great deal of equipment that you need if you are to make a film with success, and this too is something that you should try to be aware of from the start. There will be a lot of equipment that you need to source, and you might even find that it is quite surprising just how much there is once you start listing it all. If you have a think now about some of the equipment you are likely to need, you will see soon enough that it can be a little overwhelming finding it all.

To begin with the obvious, you are going to need – at least – two cameras. There are very few movies that can be made with just one camera, although it is of course possible. But generally you will need two or more, nd how many depends on the complexity of what you are trying to achieve. You’ll also obviously want those cameras to be the best quality you can afford, but the good news there is that there are many fairly decent quality cameras you can get hold of for a small price these days, so you might not have to search too hard for that.

Beyond cameras, you will also need to find other equipment depending on the kinds of scenes you are hoping to shoot. You might need to get hold of a rough terrain crane for larger shots, for instance, or a track if you are filming any scenes where the action moves around quite a lot. A major piece of equipment you will need in all cases is a good lighting rig, which again can vary in complexity depending on the movie itself. But you will need some kind of lighting which you can use in a professional sense if you are to make your movie look as good as possible, so this is something you don’t want to overlook.

Beyond that, you will need the mixing equipment for the sound, and any sound recorders that you might feel are necessary, possibly even including a boom mic. You will need some kind of editing software – which can be found pretty easily and pretty cheap these days – and a computer to use it on. All of this is likely to take a while to come by, and much of it will cost you dearly, so you need to be sure that you can afford it and that you are approaching sourcing it in a sensible manner. As long as you manage to get a hold of it all, you will be able to make your movie much more easily.

Hiring Actors

Not all movies have actors, of course. If you are making an animated movie, you are not going to need actors unless you have a need for voice actors of course. But most movies have actors, at least one or two, and you have to start thinking about hiring those people early on, as they are essentially the most important part of the whole process. If you end up with actors who don’t really do the job well enough, then the whole movie can fall apart much more easily, so this is something which you need to think about early on.

When it comes to casting, you need to have a clear image in your mind of what you expect for each character, but to remain somewhat flexible as well. It is always possible that you will end up having to compromise a little, especially if you are running a low-budget operation, so it’s wise to be aware of that and make plans for that. However, with any luck, you should be able to find the right actors for your roles, and that will mean that you can get started on filming with much greater confidence.

Bear in mind as you are casting that experience is important, but that the audition is what wins out over all. As long as the actor in question is able to bring a certain something to the role which you are looking for, that is really all that matters. Often it is about the actor being the right type for the role, even if they don’t have much experience on set.

Scheduling

Before you start shooting, and after you have got everything ready, you need to start thinking about the scheduling of the movie. This is arguably one of the most difficult parts of the entire process, and one which causes many producers and directors a great deal of headaches. To schedule your movie, you need to make sure that you are providing enough time for every stage of the filmmaking process, from scripting to shooting and editing and post-production. All of this takes time, and you need to allow yourself as much time as necessary to ensure it is all done properly and without being overly rushed. With proper scheduling, you will find it much easier to create the movie you want to create.
