Bohemian Rhapsody (2018) Film Review

Does the film do Queen justice?

Rami Malek’s take on Freddie Mercury is finally here.

Named after one of Queen’s biggest hits, Bohemian Rhapsody follows the journey of the iconic band, in particular the story of Freddie. A talented, charismatic young man struggling to come to deals with himself, he is equally the driving force of the narrative and the glimpse into the life of an outsider.

From the inception of the band to their legendary Live Aid performance, the biographical film touches on it all.

Rami’s take on Freddie is absolutely superb and convincing in both his looks, sound and personality. The rest of the casting is also just sublime, most notably the other Queen members who look just like their real-life counterparts.

If you are somewhat oddly unfamiliar with Queen, after watching the film you will leave knowing so much about them. Even if you are a fan, you will likely get to learn even more about Freddie and the band, especially his relationship with lifelong friend Mary Austin.

What the film really nails is how lonely Freddie felt during what should have been the pinnacle of his life. As his band members moved on with their partners and began starting a family, Freddie was left with no one. There is one scene in particular that highlights how humans as a whole deal with loneliness and uncertainty.

You really feel and connect with his journey which goes to show that director Bryan Singer has truly done the beloved singer’s story justice!

We miss you Freddie.

Verdict: A touching, insightful and emotional look at Freddie Mercury’s life. Rami truly shines and delivers!

Overall Rating: 8.5/10
