Life is not always a bed of roses when it comes to finding love and actually getting approval from your fam bam, especially for Nick Young (Henry Golding) in romantic comedy Crazy Rich Asians.
The film which has made waves across the globe follows Nick and girlfriend Rachel Chu (Constance Wu). Unbeknown to Rachel, Nick is actually the son of a crazy rich family in Singapore, common knowledge to everyone except the unwitting bride to be.
But everything changes when Nick takes her to Singapore to celebrate a friend’s wedding and finally meet his rich family.
Things quickly take a turn for the worst when Rachel meets Nick’s mother, Eleanor (Michelle Yeoh) who refuses to accept Rachel as her son’s partner.
The film, directed by Jon M. Chu really shines a light on the struggle of acceptance within their partner’s families in a resonating matter. It’s not about personality here, it’s about social class and how it can extend into shaping love and romance in today’s modern times. Cross culturally, it’s the timeless story of the Montagues and Capulets, except with more extravagance and excess.
What’s so alarming and confronting here is that the social conflict is still well and truly intact in 2018.
Realism aside, Crazy Rich Asians has just about everything a good rom-com should have. Tears, laughter, beautiful weddings, and a stunning soundtrack. Even the hilarious Ken Jeong makes an appearance!
Verdict: A touching tale on love and all the crazy things that come with it.
Overall Rating: 7.5/10
