After a long delay between the second instalment of Maze Runner due to Dylan O’Brian getting seriously injured on set, the last piece of the puzzle has arrived.
This time around the hunt is seriously on for the cure to the deadly “Flare” disease as the elitists desperately search for Thomas (Dylan O’Brien). It picks up right where The Scorch Trials ended with Kaya Scodelario‘s character Teresa joining the dark side with Ava (Patricia Clarkson) and Game of Thrones Littlefinger himself, Aidan Gillen who plays the menacing Janson.
At times the material seems all too familiar after the likes of Resident Evil and dystopian teen franchises like The Hunger Games and Divergent.
What makes it more noticeable here is that the craze has died down during the film delay as it did with the vampire phase (aka Twilight era). But thankfully the film does offer a certain uniqueness about itself with fresh twists and turns thrown into the mix. Ki Hong Lee gets a special mention for revisiting the virtual realm of yet another maze with a maddened poise.
Make sure you rewatch the first two before heading into The Death Cure as it can get confusing after the huge release date gap.
Verdict: A fitting end to a series that brought a little something new to the dystopian phenomena.
