After 2 long years, The Last Jedi has Imperial marched into cinemas.
The long awaited sequel to Disney’s reboot follows Rey’s path to finding answers. It is much darker to The Force Awakens as we delve more into Rey’s inner conflict and the connection she has with Kylo Ren. Meanwhile, the galaxy between dark and light continues with the stakes at an all time high and that’s all we are going to say without revealing too much!
While there are plenty of thrills to be had here, there are quite a few problems with this installment. Its strange, choppy back and forth pacing and superficial character development for one major stakeholder undermine the gravitas it might have otherwise produced. There is also a lot of set up in the first half and random sequences thrown together throughout which can give viewer some serious whiplash.
Once the film does pick up everything is full steam ahead. The fast transitions between scenes then make much more sense and subsequently helps build up suspense between each character’s story arc.
Standouts for the film include another stunning performance by Daisy Ridely as Rey, Jurassic Park’s Laura Dern who makes for one of the series most iconic scenes to date, Oscar Isaac as the courageous Poe and of course the series iconic stars Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker and the late Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia. Every moment Carrie is on-screen is a cherished one and each scene she is in just has this beautiful aura about it and may make you get all teary.
Verdict: While not amazing, and at time frenetic, Star Wars: The Last Jedi still manages to delight and deliver fans some serious nostalgia with a hint of freshness.
