Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them (2016) Film Review

Return to the world of magic…

Director: David Yates
Stars: Eddie Redmayne, Ezra Miller, Katherine Waterston, Colin Farrell.
Classification: M

Welcome back Muggles! (And NoMaj’s for Americans).

Fantastic Beasts is finally here and transports audiences back to the land of J.K Rowling‘s magical world.

What makes this prequel/spin-off work is that it does not try to be Harry Potter. It keeps to its own story, complete with a stellar cast.

The story follows Newt Scamander (Redmayne) who travels to America in the hunt of finding magical creatures. Along the way he gets caught up in the politics and drama of the country when he meets muggle, Jacob Kowalski (Dan Fogler) and magical detective, Porpentina Goldstein (Katherine Waterston).

From there we are transported into a world of cutesy magical beast hunting, all while dark forces are hard at work in trying to expose the wizarding community.

For those viewers who want a through and through Potter fest, there is famous fan lore nods dropped here and there. As soon as they pop up, audiences will surely pinpoint them with excitement. No apologies to the people in the row behind us!

There is also a lot of potential to explore more aspects mentioned in the Potter series, which makes this new series an exciting one for all Harry Potter lovers.

What becomes underwhelming in the first of five films is the murky exploration into the deeper story of the series. It is hard to predict exactly where the story will go (but that adds to the fun of it all).

Although with a great cast and crew at the helm, we are in for a potentially spellbinding series.

Verdict: A fantastic addition to the Harry Potter universe that is in a league of its own.
