From the director of Sicario, Prisoners and Enemy, as well as the upcoming Blade Runner Sequel Denis Villeneuve brings us one of his rare dabbles in science fiction – Arrival.

When unidentified spacecrafts arrive all across the globe, an elite team led by expert linguist Louise Banks (Amy Adams) are brought together to investigate their purpose. Global war is approaching and it’s up to Banks and her team to find the answers.

In the first full length trailer as well as the series of dozen posters released, a bizarrely shaped hovering object is shown in the sky, as seen against the familiar urban and natural landscapes it beckons a creeping sense of ominous foreshadowing.
Furthermore, in the trailer one of the aliens have been shown to be quite like the star fish we have so often seen in aquariums– except this one’s in a spaceship where gravity is apparently self-established.

There are many more questions we can ask about the Villeneuve helmed project, such as the ink-like method of communication these aliens seem to use, as well as the sudden departure that was depicted in the trailer. But of course, the biggest question is also its tag line  – ‘Why are they here?
The grand mystery also stars Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker, The Avengers) and Oscar winner Forest Whitaker (Platoon, The Last King of Scotland). All three headliners have had a very decent track record in the past few years and Villeneuve’s distinct style may just bring something different on top.
