Ben Affleck has been many things, a CIA agent, the brother of a genius, an actor who played Superman and most recently the Dark Knight himself. Now in the upcoming feature film The Accountant directed by Gavin O’Connor best known for his work The Warrior, Ben Affleck IS… well, the accountant.
Also starring Oscar nominee Anna Kendrick (Up in the Air), Oscar Winner J.K. Simmons (Whiplash, Spider-Man) and Jon Bernthal (Fury) as well as two time Oscar Nominee John Lithgow (Interstellar) and Golden Globe winner Jeffrey Tambor (Transparent), The Accountant tells the story of Christian Wolff, a socially-inept math savant who works at a small-town CPA office…which really isn’t all that interesting. Yet, by night Wolff is also a freelance accountant for some of the world’s most dangerous criminal organisations. Prompted by the investigation of the Treasury Department’s Crime Enforcement Division, headed by Ray King (J.K. Simmons), Wolff takes a legitimate client: a state-of-the-art robotics company where an accounting clerk (Anna Kendrick) has discovered a multi-million dollar discrepancy. A determined man doing his job, Wolff ‘uncooks’ the books to solve the mystery. But the closer Christian comes to the truth, the more men are laid down in his path.
The film will be rated R, and the trailer, as accompanied by Radiohead’s haunting song Everything in its Right Place seems like the tale of a slightly more self-aware, perhaps wildly more violent Rainman by the way Affleck held the sniper rifle and how he may have beat up bullies as a kid. Either way it’s certainly thrilling to see a socially-awkward genius, quite the usual concept in Hollywood, be put in a crime-drama setting to kick some ass as Ben Affleck.
