Tinashe – Aquarius (Album Review)

A darkly urban R&B upcoming gem…

Watch out for this new up-and-comer, she may have been relatively unseen in the spotlight but prepare to see a whole lot more of her.
Don’t believe me? Just take a look at her latest two collaborations with other up-an-comer Nick Jonas, as she appears on a remix of his new single “Jealous” and one thumping banger on Calvin Harris‘s latest album ‘Motion’, titled “Dollar Signs”.
Aquarius marks the first studio album by Tinashe, as she has signed with RCA records and it is a delightfully pure dark R&B summer smash. With big time producers like Mike Will Made It (who most famously worked alongside Miley Cyrus with her Bangerz era), and DJ Mustard you can’t go wrong.
In terms of similarities, Tinashe does draw some familiarty with Lenny Kravitz’s daughter Zoe Kravitz (Lolawolf), as the instrumentals used throughout the album resemble a familiar sound to hers. As for her voice – think Cassie, Ashanti and Ciara.

Tinashe proves to dish-out a cocktail punch of powerful messages on life, truth, love, confusion etc., delving beyond your usual love flare tunes that continuously dominate radio markets. First singles “2 On” and “Pretend” although prove that Tinashe is not just an alternative urban trend-setter, in that she can also produce big radio club bangers.
VERDICT: Tinashe is one to watch, as she gives something that’s missing on radio… a powerfully dark new R&B artist, who at times deals with deep life questions.
Aquarius is certainly a must-listen, for those who love seeking out new up and comers.

Best Tracks: Aquarius, 2 On, Pretend, All Hands on Deck, Wildfire.
